Bristol Motor Speedway stands as one of motorsports’ most iconic venues, known worldwide as “The Last Great Colosseum.” Built in 1960-61 by Tennessee entrepreneurs Larry Carrier, Carl Moore, and R.G. Pope, the track opened on July 30, 1961, as a perfect half-mile oval with 22-degree banking and seating for 18,000 fans. In 1969, the facility underwent a dramatic transformation, being reconfigured to measure 0.533 miles with a steep 36-degree banking in the turns, making it the steepest in NASCAR and earning the title of “World’s Fastest Half-Mile.”
Located in Bristol, Tennessee, in the heart of the Tri-Cities region, the all-concrete high-banked oval has become one of the sport’s most challenging and exciting tracks. Bristol’s tight confines and steep banking create intense close-quarters racing that has produced countless legendary moments since its first NASCAR race. The facility has grown from its modest beginnings to a 146,000-seat venue that ranks as Tennessee’s largest sports arena, complete with the massive Colossus TV screen hanging above the track.
The ARCA Menards Series East began competing at Bristol in 2012, and since 2021, the track has served as the traditional season finale where championships are decided. The 2026 ARCA Menards Series East season will conclude on September 17 at Bristol, continuing the tradition of crowning champions under the lights of this historic colosseum.
