Michigan International Speedway opened in 1968 as a two-mile D-shaped oval in Brooklyn, Michigan, built by Detroit developer Lawrence LoPatin. Designed by Charles Moneypenny, who also created Daytona International Speedway, the track features 18-degree banking and 73-foot-wide sweeping turns that make it one of the fastest speedways in NASCAR. After facing early financial difficulties, the facility was purchased in 1973 by racing entrepreneur Roger Penske, who transformed it into a premier motorsports destination through extensive upgrades and expansion.
Located in southeastern Michigan’s scenic Irish Hills region on over 1,400 acres, the speedway has become a cornerstone of American motorsports. The track’s wide racing surface and moderate banking create multiple racing lines and consistently produce the highest average speeds among tracks on the circuit. The ARCA Menards Series first competed at Michigan in 1980, took a decade-long hiatus, then returned in 1990 and has raced at the facility every year since. Michigan now stands as the only two-mile superspeedway on the NASCAR schedule.
The ARCA Menards Series will return to Michigan International Speedway on June 5, 2026, opening a NASCAR race weekend that showcases the speed and competitive spirit this legendary track has delivered for over half a century.
