Rockingham Speedway stands as one of stock car racing’s most storied venues. Originally opened on Halloween night in 1965 as a flat one-mile oval, the track was founded by Darlington Raceway creator Harold Brasington. In 1969, the facility was reconfigured into a distinctive D-shaped, high-banked oval that today measures 0.94 miles in length. This unique layout quickly earned “The Rock” a reputation for exceptional racing and challenging drivers with its abrasive surface that demands careful tire management.
Located in Richmond County, North Carolina, the speedway sits at the intersection of U.S. Route 1 and North Carolina Highway 177 in the heart of the North Carolina Sandhills. The facility hosted NASCAR’s top series continuously from 1965 through 2004, welcoming legends like Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, and Jeff Gordon to Victory Lane. After NASCAR’s departure, the track began hosting ARCA races in 2008, with Joey Logano winning that inaugural event.
Following a $9 million state investment in 2021, Rockingham celebrated a triumphant return to national racing in 2025. The ARCA Menards Series East is scheduled to return April 3-4, 2026, as part of a NASCAR tripleheader weekend. The 2025 ARCA East race was won by Brent Crews, continuing the track’s tradition of launching future NASCAR stars.
